Last night I was at my female leadership book club.
Last month, we read Michael Walker’s “Why We Sleep” drawing the critical link between sleep and optimal brain function. We enter into three states of sleep at night. Depending on the state, we clear out the cache of learning from our short term storage and send it to long term storage. We also process issues we are struggling with. Depriving ourselves of sleep short circuits all of these processes. I shudder to think how much damage I did to my brain all those years of getting up at 1am or 230am to do the news.
This month, we read Max Lugavere’s book “Genius Foods” drawing the critical line between food and optimal brain productivity. He was spurred to study this when his mom was diagnosed with a rare form of dementia. In this book, he reveals how the foods we eat directly affect our ability to focus, learn, remember, create, and analyze new ideas.
