OUR HISTORY BOOKS ARE MALE CENTRIC

I often talk about the impactful women’s empowerment class I took back in 2010. Jennifer Macaluso-Gilmore started the class with a history lesson about the POWERFUL women throughout history. In school, we celebrate the men who fought and freed countries and the stories of these women were omitted along the way.  Women were painted as nymphs, nurses, or wives.  But never WARRIORS.

THERE ARE POWERFUL WOMEN IN HISTORY

Quite the opposite is true. When Egyptian Pharaoh Hatshepsut’s husband died, his son and successor was only two years old. She reigned in his place as something called a “regent” and ruled as Pharaoh until her death 21 years later. The woman pictured above were Amazonian warriors, known to be the deadliest fighters of their time. Their motto? No defeat. Only death.

WE NEED TO TELL THEIR STORIES

Former NFL player and women’s advocate Wade Davis, who spoke on our September LadyDrinks panel in 2018, emphasized that these stories need to be told too. Men need to hear them.

CELEBRATE INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY WITH LADYDRINKS AT THE MET

So we are! Friday March 8th, docent Margaret Samu will be leading us on an hour tour of the Metropolitan Museum of Art to share these stories. No better day to do it than on International Womens’ Day.
